An Invitation for Leadership Engagement

Backdrop

We would like to invite you to actively contribute as teachers, mentors, interns or volunteers for a new online educational, social and cultural network called,One-on-One Friendship at 1on1friendship.com. One-on-One Friendship is a cross-cultural platform to promote social justice. One-on-One Friendship offers cross-cultural network, knowledge sharing and leadership engagement. One-on-One Friendship encourages friendship that is meaningful among individuals of diverse backgrounds. One-on-One Friendship is especially interested in connecting youths across cultures, nations, and religions in order to better their understanding of world cultures and engaged citizenship. Such an understanding will hopefully spark dialogue, creative collaboration, and activism.

Why do you volunteer? The world depends on you and you can change the world. You are the most important of that change. The change starts with you and all of us. The world will not change, unless we change inside us. We change to become better individuals and leaders within our communities. Hopefully, our change gains momentum and inspires others to change as well. Together, we can make difference. Be part of the change you want to see around us.

One-on-One Friendship invites all of you to be part of transformative change. We invite you to share your valuable time and creative mind through meaningful programs. We offer different levels of leadership engagement. You choose what is confortable to you. Any leadership engagement you take is an important contribution to our life. We are also actively seeking partnership to promote excellence, compassion and service.

"Salaam alaykum, my name is John and I live and work in Chaska, Minnesota, USA. When I'm not working, I enjoy keeping honey bees and riding bicycles.

I converted to Islam several years ago. I was lucky enough to learn Arabic in college, and I read the Qur'an as soon as I was able. In large part because of the wonderful Muslims I became friends with, I knew I should be a Muslim!"

Lily Kane

Hi there! My name is Ren. I'm a junior from a small town called Hammond in the North-Eastern part of the U.S. and am currently studying Cultural Anthropology and Environmental Studies at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. I am passionate about advocating for social justice, and strive for this through the work of non-profit organizations. I believe that any positive change must start with a mutual understanding, and that is why I strive to learn about other cultures beyond my own. “How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.” ~Anne Frank

Kevin Manuel Collado

Hello, my name is Kevin and I am a rising Junior at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. I am majoring in Architectural Studies with a minor in Music, and I expect to graduate with a Bachelor's degree in 2018. I grew up in the Bronx and now live in Kent, New York, where I coexist with my mother, father, and older sister. At home, we speak both English and Spanish, which is an integral piece of my identity. For as long as I can remember, my parents have instilled in me a sense of respect for all cultures and the value of meeting people with different perspectives. I volunteer because I know I can gain so much from simply conversing with another individual. In my free time, I love to play soccer, draw, run long distances, eat, read, sing, and play with dogs.

Rizky Kafrawi;

Hi, I’m Rizky and I plan on attending Hobart and William Smith Colleges in the fall of 2016 as a freshman. I have a strong interest in biology and genetics and I wish to become a genetic counselor in the future. I was born in Montreal, Canada and I’ve lived most of my life in Geneva, NY. In the past, I’ve lived in Indonesia for extended periods of time, and the lessons I’ve learned from the interactions I experienced during these visits were indispensible in the formation of my identity. So, I hope to give back to Indonesia by volunteering in this program and exposing my fellow Indonesians to the English language and American culture. In my free time, I am constantly obsessing over soccer—my favorite team is FC Barcelona.

Conroy, Madeline

Hi my name is Maddy! I'm from Albany, NY but I graduated from Clayton A. Bouton High School in Voorheesville, NY. I'm a first year at Hobart and William Smith Colleges and I've always loved reading, writing, and art so I plan on being an English major with a minor in Media and Society. I was recruited by Professor Anwar at the Club and Activities Expo for One-on-One Friendship and now I'm the Secretary and I've enjoyed being in the club ever since. I've had little to no exposure to Asian and/or Muslim culture so I'm very excited to learn more about Indonesia and its people! I also love volunteering and participating in different clubs; in addition to One-on-One Friendship I'm in the GirlUp and Fencing clubs.
