CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF SEASREP AND SOUTHEAST ASIAN STUDIES UNIVERSITY OF GADJAH MADA, YOGYAKARTA, INDONESIA
4-5 NOVEMBER 2015

CALL FOR PAPERS

SEASREP will commemorate its 20th anniversary with an international conference, CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF SEASREP AND SOUTHEAST ASIAN STUDIES, at the University of Gadjah Mada in Yogyakarta, Indonesia on 4-5 November 2015. The conference is supported by the Toyota Foundation and the Japan Foundation Asia Center (Tokyo).

The conference aims to reflect upon the achievements of SEASREP over the past 20 years by encouraging SEASREP grantees, participants, partners, and scholars of Southeast Asian studies to share their research findings. The conference is also interested in new studies about the region. Aside from paper presentations, the conference will feature special opening and closing panels where speakers will discuss the state, progress and prospects of Southeast Asian studies in the future.

The conference is open to all Southeast Asian specialists in the humanities and social sciences. Grants are available (see below) for Southeast Asians in the region who wish to read papers and require some support.

PROPOSALS FOR INDIVIDUAL PAPERS AND PANELS

Papers must be about a Southeast Asian country other than that of the paper reader, or about a regional theme, or a comparative study of two or more countries in the region—in keeping with SEASREP’s thrust of promoting studies of the region by Southeast Asians—on any of the topics below:

  • Nature of and new approaches to Southeast Asian studies

  • Border economies and border studies

  • Peace and conflict resolution

  • Gender studies

  • Geography, environment, rural landscapes, urbanization

  • Language, religion, culture and identity politics

  • Southeast Asian heritage

The conference also welcomes papers on other topics relating to Southeast Asia that are innovative, interesting and relevant. Panel (rather than individual) proposals on such topics are preferred.

To submit proposals for individual papers or panels, download the appropriate registration form from the SEASREP website at http://www.seasrepfoundation.org.

GRANTS

Grants for airfare and/or accommodation are available for Southeast Asian scholars residing in the region whose papers are accepted for the Conference. Grants are awarded to individuals, not to panels; however, panel members may apply for a grant individually provided their panel’s proposal is accepted. The registration fee is waived for grantees.

To apply for a grant, fill in the relevant portion of the registration form.

REGISTRATION FEE

A registration fee shall be charged to cover conference materials, daily lunch and snacks, welcome and farewell dinners, and transportation to the Borobodur temple site, where the farewell dinner will take place.

The registration fee is US$100 (net of remittance and bank charges) and shall be remitted to the SEASREP account (details provided on registration form) after the applicant receives the notice of acceptance by the Conference. If paid after the deadline (see below), the fee shall be US$150.
