Nice to see you again.ehem..virtually ^-^. This time, I'd like to share the idea of using the authentic materials in studying English for EAP.
Questions:
1. What?
Make it easier okay..authentic materials in this context are defined as non-translated materials. Meaning that they are already in English. It is a genuine writing in English already, preferably from the native or editted English version material. Those materials could be from text books, journals, qualified newspapers (don't get me wrong..there are also lots of junk newspapers and tabloid which are rubbish ..), qualified popular scientific books, English news channel from BBC, CNN, NBC, etc..and other visual information outlets.
2. Why?
If you really want to enhance your EAP for specific purpose (taking TOEFL, IELTS, study abroad, or other formal reasons), then I strongly encourage you to open up your eyes, ears, heart, and soul. wow. a lot and.so versatile!!! oh yesss...you know why? Because all of your senses and instruments will then get used to hearing the nuance of native English (their pronounciation, grammar, and how to use a precise and correct ones). NO MORE INDONESIAN-ENGLISH, SINGAPOREAN-ENGLISH, ETC... although ...when you practice your speaking, you might still have your 'original accent'. Hey..that's absolutely fine. ACCENT is beautiful..English speaking people never judge you based on your accent. They feel appreciated because you did your best to learn their language. so don't worry be happy ^-^ I mean..be yourself folks ^-^.. Additionally, throughout the process and times, you could have or might be influenced by the native english's accent..could be American (new york, texas, etc), British (south, London, Cockney, Geordie, Noth, Scotish, Irish, etc), Oz (yeah...Australian accent), or others.. Don't bother. Language is also a talent...some people have a very good grasp on language..particularly when they speak and leran more than 2 international language already (it is based on my personal experience, professional involvement also..when I worked for bilingual students in the UK and Netherlands)
3. Where?
Get and do your home work. Nowadays, we are lured with lots of information in English.BUT...yes a big BUT, Bear in mind, you MUST be selective in terms of choosing where you want to get those materials. Well..as we are talking about EPA, I suggest that you surf on the sensible, qualified, trustworthy sources. Like the one that I have mentioned before. Bear in mind, as English is not your native language, then for an early step, you might just become the copier or the user of this language. So, when you learn, copy, and look up from WRONG/rubbish materials...then well....sorry...your English might end up as non-professional and non-academic sound English. Which is okay...if you just want to use it as daily conversation..BUT CERTAINLY NOT ENOUGH FOR ACADEMIC AND OTHER FORMALITIES...
4. When?
Right now...use the internet, use TV, Use Radio (BBC broadcast, and others), use your friends (I suggest you get yourself around with higher level's friend in English to leverage your own level. Staying with the same and average level is okay for tandem learning..but you need to look up to some one who is more competent than yourself right???)
